Second Paper: Action of Immune Sera on Pneumococcus Infection.* by Augustus B. Wadsworth, M.d

چکیده
In my first paper on " ' Studies on Pneumococcus Infection in Animals , I summarized in the introduction the significant results of previous work and then recorded my experimental studies on the action of the pneumococcus on animal tissues and of immune sera on the pneumococcus. The present paper deals with .the action of immune sera on pneumococcus infection and with the mechanism of recovery in animals. The earliest observers, Foa and Carbone, Emmerich and Fowitsky, Kruse and Pansini, G. and F. Klemperer, and many others mentioned in the introductory summary of the first paper, record experiments showing the effect of immune serum on pneumococcus infections of animals and human beings. G. and F. Klemperer ( I ) treated in.ocul~ted mice with immune serum which they obtained from animals immunized with cutture precipitates. In these experiments and in a limited study of the treatment of pneumonia in human beings they found this serum effective and considered its action anti, toxic. Although these results were considered favorable by the Klemperers, they have recorded no other experiments. Similarly, on the basis of favorable effects in studies on animals several observers, notably Pane (2) , RSmer (3) , and Neufeld (4) , have since urged the use of immune sera in pneumococcus infection of man. But in the hands of others, these sera have failed to yield convincing results. Thus, previous attempts to secure an efficient serum for the treatment of pneumonia in man

Studies on Pneumococcus Infection in Animals
From the results of this study of the action of immune sera on pneumococcus infection it is evident that immune sera vary greatly in their curative value. Immune sera possess protective action, but protective action is not necessarily indicative of curative action. Treatment with the serum of normal rabbits may prolong the course of pneumococcus infection in the rabbit. This action, however, is...
متن کاملA Study of Pneumococci Isolated from Horses Undergoing Pneumococcus Immunization
IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT THE PNEUMOCOCCUS MULTIPLYING IN THE TISSUES OF THE IMMUNIZED ANIMAL (HORSE) BECOMES ATTENUATED: loses, in varying degrees, its virulence, capacity of capsule formation, susceptibility to phagocytosis, and type specificity. The antigenic activity as an immunizing agent and the production of "soluble specific substance" are also altered. In some instances, the typical pneum...
متن کاملStudy of the Classification of Meningococci
The meningococcus, like some other pathogenic species, varies in its agglutination in immune serum, some strains being readily agglutinable while others agglutinate with difficulty in their homologous serum as well as in heterologous serums. The different strains appear to vary also in their action as antigens. In order to secure representative strains, therefore, it was thought necessary to co...
متن کاملA Note on the Production of Antipneumococcus Sera
Horses immunized to Type I pneumococci developed serum, 0.1 cc. of which protected against 0.5 cc. of a virulent culture, 0.000001 cc. of which killed mice in less than 40 hours. Protective tests of serum from horses immunized to Type II organisms varied, 0.1 cc. protecting, however, in certain instances against 0.1 and 0.01 cc. of virulent homologous culture. Types I and II sera obtained in ou...
متن کاملA Study of the Mechanism of Recovery from Experimental Pneumococcus Infection
A study was made of the blood of cats and rabbits during experimental pneumococcus infection with a view to ascertaining the relationship of acquired immune properties to the mechanism of recovery. Observations were directed chiefly towards the detection of pneumococcidal promoting substances, but the other manifestations of anti-pneumococcus reaction were studied as well. It was found constant...
